Wordless (nearly) Wednesday - our old farm homes

These are photos of my parent's farmhouse (on the flat land), where I grew up, followed by my wife's parent's farmhouse (on a hill), four and a half miles away, near Coon Rapids, Iowa, where she grew up. Many of our family photos show one of these houses in the background, or we were inside when the photo was taken. Both were abandoned, in the mid 1980s when these photos were taken, and are long gone, now. Memories.

  1. I suppose most of us would rather not deal with the problems that come up with houses that old, Bill, but it sure is sad to see them go. They have a mystique that more modern houses lack. (Or is that just the romantic notion of a girl from the suburbs?)

  2. Both T.K.,... you are likely in the position of my daughters, all three grew up in the suburbs, but the farms were still there for visits when they were young... they can remember them... ;-)

  4. People today are so transient that they cannot go back and pinpoint one place as 'home'...these are both beautiful pictures. thanks for sharing.

  5. Thanks for sharing. I know it is hard to see the place you grew up torn down.

  6. The houses of my grandparents hold an almost mystical quality for me, especially knowing I won't ever be inside the houses again. I love to remember walking around in them, recalling the layout of the rooms in as exact detail as I can. Fun memory exercise!

  8. I remember your house and always thought it was a great house. We still have our house and have been fortunate to have renters. I like having the option to go back to this house and land.

  9. Yes, it was a great house. Mom hung onto it as long as she could. Came a day, though, when it just didn't make sense anymore. All were gone elsewhere... ;-)

  10. It's funny because I can still "smell" both of these houses in my mind. Different rooms had different smells and it's interesting that I still remember them when I encounter a similar smell. When I was going through boxes recently I encountered both "houses". The fragrances both make me smile and bring back specific memories.

  11. All of our senses contribute to your memories and stories we remember. Good reminder for when we tell our stories, as well! ;-)
