My Aunt, Colleen (Davis) Kinnick

    Colleen Jo Ann Kinnick, age 90, of Bayard, IA, passed away on Sunday, April 7, 2019 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson.

     Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating.  Eulogist will be John Kult.  Music for the service will be by Lula Garnes as organist and Cindy Seastrom, Peg Wiemers, and John and Sharon Richardson as vocalists.  Casket bearers will be Colleen’s grandchildren.

     Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 – 7 P.M. on Wednesday.  The casket will be moved to the church at 9:30 A.M. on Thursday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M.    Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids and online condolences may be left for the family atwww.dahnandwoodhhouse.com

     Born on June 17, 1928 in Osceola, IA, she was the daughter of Wesley and Eunice (Parker) Davis.  She was raised in Coon Rapids where she graduated from high school in 1946.  Colleen played Basketball on the Coon Rapids team that won the State Championship in 1946 and was selected first team all state forward.  She was then selected to play on Dr. Swets AAU Girls National Team that finished second in the nation.  Colleen then attended the University of Iowa for two years. She was married to Edward “Buzz” Kinnick on June 23, 1948 at the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids by Rev. Eugene Alexander.  The couple made their home north of Coon Rapids where they farmed.  They moved to their current farm three years later between Bayard and Coon Rapids and Colleen worked part time at Frohlich’s Grocery Store.  After her children were raised she attended nursing school at DMACC in Carroll.  She then worked at Greene County Extended Care in Jefferson until her retirement.  She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids, P.E.O. and Eastern Star.  Colleen enjoyed gardening, crocheting, tatting, raising flowers, but most of all, she loved being a Grandma.

     Colleen is survived by her husband Ed “Buzz” Kinnick of 70 years of Bayard; two daughters: Marcia Lewis of Bayard and Cindy Franzeen (Sid) of Scranton; a son Lon Kinnick (Donna) of Glidden; a daughter-in-law Cindy Kinnick of Bayard; thirteen grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

     Colleen was preceded in death by her parents Wesley and Eunice Davis; her mother and father-in-law Paul and Dorothy Kinnick; a brother Duane Davis (Dorothy); a brother-in-law Leo Kinnick (Ida Marie); and a sister-in-law Eileen Olsen (Roland); a son Bryan Kinnick; and a son-in-law Neil Lewis.

Sunday, February 8:

Billy went to church. Leo’s came & he went after Bill. Had creamed chicken, noodles, ice cream for dinner. Pinned drapes up in P.M. Buzz & Colleen stopped on way to Perry to meet train. Took Leo’s car. Plymouth froze up last night really cold. Some diamond Bussy gave her. He got back early. Played cards after supper & then they left.


My comments:

Buzzy had been discharged from the Army in Seattle on January 7, the news article says.

Colleen was going back to Iowa City to school, I assume. They got married in June of 1948.

Monday, April 8:

Sunny but windy and chilly. Patched o’alls for Billy & Pete. Did sep. Harold here after cream & eggs. Pete took 4 sows to town in pickup. Cut out 4 o’alls - Jim, 1 jacket for Bill. Pete home at 3:00. When Billy came I took him & Jim to Mom’s. … Home & bathed & went to Girl’s & Boy’s Basketball Banquet. Mashed potatoes, gravy, peas, fresh salad, ham, ice cream, cake. Nice program. Bill Creighton, Gene Summate, Chisholm. Talked to Buzz & Colleen. They had car. We had pick-up. Out after boys. Did Jennings & all ever razz Colleen & Buzz. He blushed. Sang in Quartet.


My comments:

So much to say, so little space. Buzz and Colleen had just started really going together. He was star on Boy’s BB team, too… but they weren’t that good. Colleen star on Championship team, of course. Each so tall and good looking (photo of them together, to come, later on). Made quite a couple. Noted that Buzz had Mom & Dad’s car a lot, lately, leaving them with the pickup, when Buzz had dates!! What fun!

Chose the photo of the singers for here. Madrigal actually performed at graduation, I think. Buzz and Bruce were in the quartet with two of the girls from this group.

Personal note: Last summer, at a funeral, it was fun to see both Buzz and Bruce, together again after a number of years, both now in their mid-eighties. Bruce had been living in Arizona for quite a while.

March - Girls BB State Championship

The Coon Rapids High School Girl’s Basketball Team, in March of 1946, won the State Championship. Mom and Dad went to most of the home games during the season.

Small town Iowa went crazy for their BB, as everyone knows. Here are some of the entries for the days of the State Tournament Games they were able to attend. I can ‘feel’ the anxiety in Mom as she recorded these entries. While in Des Moines, they visited relatives, briefly each day, before and after going to the “Field House” on the Drake University campus for the games. See my additional comments, below, as well.

Wednesday, March 13:

Nice day. Got Billy to school. Mildred stopped & said she’d like to go to Des M. with us. Washed & set my hair. Mom & Buss came at 11:00. Ate dinner. Mildred try school out early & we left at 3:45. Parked across from grocery store & Pete went in & got some lunch for us. Went to field house. Had a long wait. Coon beat Callender by a big score. Drove down town. Ate at Mal’s lunch. Fried chicken, shoe strings, salad. Pete got lunch at Perry. Home at 2:00


On Thursday, March 14, her entry started with: “Really tired.” Duh! ;-)

Friday, March 15:

Got up at 8:00 & got Billy off to school. Did up work. Mom & Bussy came for dinner. Did dishes & cleaned up. Mildred let school out at 2:30. Pete had Dan come & milk. Left at 3:00. Stopped at Francis’. Had orange juice. Mrs. Buenneke, Rippey, Ethel Brutsche there, too. Took them to field house. Saw New Prov. beat Guthrie Center & we beat Steamboat Rock. Really good games. Stopped at Perry & had lunch. Home at 2:00. When we got home folks said no more tickets available so we told Dad to call Roger 1st thing in the morning. To Pearl’s for lunch cake & cocoa.

Saturday, March 16:

Really rainy. Did up work. Pete went to town at ten to see Irene about tickets. Bussy & Mom sick. Mrs. Pevestorf came to watch the boys. Jack Bow. came to see if Joan could go too. In town to get Irene. Left at 1:30. Stopped at Frances & Rogers & got the hard to get tickets. Mildred, Kay, Boise there. Frances played for us. Over to Kates. Had cake & coffee then got Barbara & went to Field House. Saw Steamboat beat Guthrie & our girls beat New Providence. Gave Colleen Bussy’s letter. To Pearl’s for lunch. Barbara played for us. Home at 2:00.

The March 10th, 2016, edition of the Coon Rapids Enterprise had a story for the 70th Anniversary, including this quote, among much more detail:

“…the Coon girls reached the state tournament, and then, as the Coon Rapids Enterprise reported, “they mowed ‘em down! One, two, three, four in order.” Callender, Yarmouth, Steamboat Rock, New Providence. It was a glorious finish to a wonderful season for Coach Jennings’ girls, 28 victories in a row with the concluding one giving them the state title. Colleen Davis was named first team all state
forward and Patsy Williams was a first team all state guard.”

Bryan "Buzzy" Wesley Kinnick, age 54, of Bayard passed away unexpectedly at his home near Bayard on Wednesday, February 4, 2015.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating. Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 - 7 P.M. on Friday evening. The casket will be moved to the church at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday where visitation will resume until the time of service. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and soloists will be Cindy Seastrom and Peg Wiemers. Casket bearers will be Jeff McCool, Mark McCool, Tom Hoffman, Terry Hoffman, Justin Hein, Dave Wiemers, Keith Hilgenberg, and Doug Duff. Born on September 29, 1960 in Carroll, he was the son of Edward "Buzz" and Colleen (Davis) Kinnick. He grew up in Bayard on his family's farm and graduated from Bayard High School in 1979. Following high school he worked for Garst and Thomas Seed Company in seed production. Bryan has continuously worked for the company through its evolution which is currently Hartung Brothers. He was married to Cindy Snyder on March 20, 1982 at the First United Methodist Church in Yale by Rev. Art Hill. Bryan and Cindy met through the Bayard - YJB class share program in Jamaica. Bryan served on the Coon Rapids - Bayard School board for seven years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bayard and he was a member of Ducks Unlimited. Bryan enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping, farming, and the occasional Bud Light. But most of all, Bryan loved spending time with his three grandchildren.

Bryan is survived by his wife Cindy of Bayard; a son Kory Kinnick and his wife Rachael of Kellogg; a daughter Kyla Kennedy of North Liberty; three grandchildren: Zoey, Hunter, and Jack; his parents Edward "Buzz" and Colleen Kinnick of Bayard; his mother-in-law Roberta Snyder of Yale; two sisters: Marcia Lewis and her husband Neil of Bayard and Cindy Franzeen and her husband Sid of Bayard; a brother Lon Kinnick and his wife Donna of Glidden; three brothers-in-law: Ron Snyder and his wife Amy of Marshalltown, Gary Snyder and his wife Stacia of Altoona, and Roger Snyder and his wife Brenda of Lake Panorama; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bryan was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father-in-law Delbert Snyder.

Great-grandchildren are starting to arrive at a rapid rate for Colleen and August “Buzz” Kinnick of rural Bayard with the arrival of two great-granddaughters in January. They now have a total of ten great-grandchildren. Kayel Marie Sanden arrived on January 8 followed by McKenna Masako lewis on January 16. Parents are Cory and Keely Sanden of rural Coon Rapids and Michael and Natalie
Lewis of rural Bayard. The Kinnicks had the opportunity to visit their new great granddaughters on Tuesday afternoon for a few photos. The session was uneventful for the young girls and, in fact, they slept peacefully through it all.

Cory and Keely Kinnick Sanden of Coon Rapids proudly announce the birth of their daughter, Kayel Marie Sanden. Kayel was born on Tuesday, January 8 at 6:40 PM at Mercy Medical
Center in Des Moines. She weighed 8 lbs and measured 20 inches.
Grandparents are Lon and Donna Kinnick of Glidden; Claudette and Rick Smith of Manson; and Bert Sanden of Manson.
Great-grandparents are August (Buzz) and Colleen Kinnick of Coon Rapids and LaVonne Langenwalter of Manson.
Kayelis also welcomed by her aunt, Kami Kinnick of Glidden and her aunt, uncle and cousins, Crystal, Frank, Layton and Ashley Sousa of Manson.

*Birth*
Natalie and Michael Lewis of rural Bayard announce the birth of their first daughter, McKenna Masako, born January 16 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. The little girl weighed 7 lbs. 12 oz. and stretched the tape measure to 20 inches.
McKenna joins older brothers, Bryce, 3, and Tucker, 2, at home.
Grandparents are Marcia and Neil Lewis of rural Bayard; and Neal and Nancy Hirota of Osage.
Great-grandparents are August (Buzz) and Colleen Kinnick of rural Bayard and Dean Nuehring of Osage, and Masaru and Tokiko Hirota of Honokaa, HI.

Comment: Being accustomed to working with relationships in the past, it is a bit curious to think of my relationship to these babies (all ten!). They would be my first cousins twice (2 gen) removed. To my daughters, they would be second cousins once (1 gen) removed. To my two grandchildren, these babies would be third cousins. I assume this to be correct (Buzz and Colleen are my aunt and uncle). If I'm not correct, I'd appreciate clarification.

These three images came to my attention on separate "otherwise seeking" searches over the last few weeks... today, I'm putting them together with a little story to connect them. Bare with me here...

First, I came across this clipping, filling in some details discussed earlier, here and here ...

Here they are, about that time... shortly after his return from the service. How about those cars? This was at our farm. House is behind us, for reference.

I have this labeled as the crowd awaiting them leaving the church after their wedding. I think that is her Dad, Wes Davis, holding the hat, near bottom step. Can you name others? ;-)

Today is literally "sharing memories" - of my own, from Mom's diary entries, from her two brothers (my uncles, Buzz and Leo; and Colleen, wife of Buzz!) and even brother Jim!

This particular line to thought started with Mom's diary entries but was really sparked by the 1940 US Census images of my grandparents, Paul and Dorothy (Sorensen) Kinnick, and son, Edward (Buzzy), in Coon Rapids, Iowa.

I realized I didn't really know how Paul and Dorothy met (even though I lived around them for many years) and I was much more vague about where they had lived over their years together than I realized. So, to add to my own research, I sent letters to their sons, Leo and Buzzy. I had a long telephone conversation with Buzzy, in response, as expected. Today, I got a nice set of responses, from Leo, via an email from his daughter, Kathleen. In the meantime, I had also talked at length with my brother, Jim, on the telephone, and he added some insights, as well.

Paul Kinnick graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1909. Buzzy says he has a paper document (in his safe deposit box, he will get me a copy) that is a contract by Lon Kinnick (Paul's father) to buy some land near Greenfield, Adair County, Iowa (about 50 miles south and a little east of Coon Rapids), around this time. This would account for Paul traveling between Coon Rapids and Greenfield in this time period. Leo said: "I think mom did house work in Stuart and Greenfield." Stuart straddles the Guthrie and Adair county line, about 20 miles north and east of Greenfield (the Adair County Seat).  Somewhere along the way, Paul met Dorothy Sorensen (she and her parents had arrived in Stuart from Denmark in about 1904; her mother died within a year of their arrival; as the oldest child, she was soon working). Another Leo quote: Dad and Uncle Robert were picking corn and if either found an ear of Indian corn they got to make a wish.  Dad found one and said "I wish I could kiss that Dorothy Sorenson.  He got his wish!" They were married on 12 Aug 1914, in Greenfield.

They made their first home, just "South of town in a 2 story stucco house.  Eileen and I lived there too." [Quote from Leo, referring to Coon Rapids; confirms what Mom had told me! (more on this later)] Leo was born there in Mar 1917, Eileen in Dec 1918. From Mom: The little white house sits just east of Shirbroun's big barn. By August of 1928, when Buzzy was born, they were all living on Main Street (in the house where Irene Fick was living in 1997).

They moved from the Main Street house in June 1936 to the farm northwest of town (where Lon and Nettie had lived). By the time of the 1940 census, they were living back in town, in the house on old 141, now Elm Street (assume it was called 2nd Street in 1940 - east-west street, two blocks north of Main Street). According to Buzzy, they moved from there out to the "Harvey Place" on the Glidden Road.,, the Bass family lived there in the 1960s and later… Buzzy said he went to High School ('42-'46) from there. Also, from fall of '46 to Jan '48, he was in Japan in the Army - I remember his return home to that house. He reminded me that Paul Nielsen (Dorothy's nephew) came and helped farm while he was gone, and, my Dad, Pete, came over and helped out as well. I remember that, with his reminder!

When Buzz and Colleen were married in Jun 1948, they made that their home, and Paul and Dorothy moved into the Trailer House I mentioned earlier, north of our house on our farm. Colleen says she has seen a photo of Tom, about 3, with them in the house in Bayard - that would have been 1951. That all comes out about right. THANKS to all!

Small world. Last Saturday, I featured the 1946 Coon Rapids High School Girl's Basketball State Championship Team - with my aunt, Colleen (Davis) KINNICK, - wife of Buzzy, my uncle (my mother's brother) Edward Kinnick, and only mentioned the boy's team. 

This week, in the hometown newspaper, The Coon Rapids Enterprise, for September 29, 2011, was this report of the 65th Class Reunion of the 1946 graduating class. They say the BOYS were passing around the above photo of the Boy's Basketball team... the overlooked ones. There is uncle Buzzy - Edward KINNICK - holding the ball in the center of the front row: 1946 Coon Rapids (IA) High School Boy's Basketball Team.

The five at the reunion (2011) are pictured below, with Buzzy again in the middle. Great looking group.
