A couple of weeks ago, son-in-law Larry Johnson asked if I remembered all the cars I/we had had - we were talking about my 80th birthday and our 60th wedding anniversary coming up. I’ve been thinking about that ever since… At the time, I recalled this post of my first car:

Since, I’ve been looking through old print photos attempting to find some of 24 or so other cars we have had. In the process, I’ve run across other photos that should be shared with stories in line with this post - “You are an Ancestor, too”:

Lions Club President in Urbandale, Iowa

This is about 1976, Gene Walker on the left is turning over the Presidential gavel to me as the new President of the Urbandale Lions Club. I had served as Third, Second, and First Vice-President of this long time club and was very proud to serve the community in this capacity. It was the leading service club in the city at the time. We sold a lot of light bulbs and made many financial and volunteer time contributions to the community every year. I ended up qualifying as a 100% President, whatever that means, meeting all the criteria expected from the position. It was a happy time. Serving others brings happiness, as we should each remember.

Simply memories, but important ones!!

Civil War Series on Sunday - Battle of Wilson's Creek

Civil War Series on Sunday - Battle of Wilson's Creek

August 10, 2010, was the 149th anniversary of the Battle of Wilson's Creek, less that fifty miles from our cabin, about 10 miles southwest of Springfield, Missouri. The Battle was the second major battle of the Civil War and the first battle fought west of the Mississippi River. Read more of the details in the link provided - it is relatively short and to the point. Also be sure to note the "brother against brother" story in the article.

The battle was also significant in that Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general killed in combat in the war, died in the Bloody Hill action these. Until I retired last year, for 15 years we had lived in Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas - Lyon County having been named for General Lyon.

On September 18, the Wilson's Creek National Battlefield Foundation will be sponsoring their annual fundraiser and a Moonlight Tour which will simulate the conditions, on the site of the battle, that existed that early morning 149 years ago.

Sunday Special - You are an Ancestor Too!

I really enjoy reading about others who see great value in telling ancestor stories, and why they say they do it. I use a Google Blog Alert to send me any Internet stories using the term "ancestor stories." Today, I was sent a nice interview that included the following quote at the end of the interview. It says a lot that I believe. I would welcome your comments!

"Yes, it would be wonderful to know our ancestors’ stories. But what we often forget is that we, too, are someone’s ancestor. We are the future historians’ primary sources. A primary source is a term historians use to describe the thoughts, opinions and witness of those people who were really there. When you record what you saw, what you felt, what you did, you become a primary source. Two hundred years from now, historians could be looking for you. What do you want them to find? Just your tombstone with the dates of your birth and death, and perhaps a line of verse? Does that tell your dreams, desires, triumphs, griefs, loves and hates?
