Nancy’s Early Childhood in Photos

Nancy Bolger Smith was a third child rather than a first child as I was in my family. Our parents knew each other well, so we knew each other in our small rural community from the very beginning. So, it is fun to share with you some Nancy photos from those early days, as well. The first is very special, the whole family as babies:

New Alaska Supreme Court Judge

Sometimes posting a current photo image is an important part of 'telling our ancestor stories.'

Today is such an occasion. This past Friday, Judge Joel H. Bolger was installed as the newest member of the Alaska Supreme Court, having moved up from the Appeals Court.

Joel is my brother-in-law; my wife, Nancy's youngest brother. We are all so proud of him. We so wished we could have been there, in Anchorage, to share the moment. Nancy's older brother, Bob, left, and his wife, Carol, represented our family. Also in the photo are Joel's wife, Cheryl, and their children, Stephanie and Jackson. Congratulations to the whole family on this memorable life event!

Besides Charlie Nixon, this 1970 photo has two of my brothers (Barry and Paul Smith) as well as a sister-in-law (Janice Bolger) and a brother-in-law (Joel Bolger) and many cousins, friends, etc.

This one has both Barry and Joel, and different cousins and friends...

Treasure Chest Thursday - Paul meets Santa

This scan of an old 35 mm slide contains much more meaning than just my brother, Paul, at 3 1/2 years old meeting Santa, sitting on Dad's knee - as if that were not enough!

The setting is 'new wing' to our rural Star Methodist Church (the school building from across the road was brought over and set on a new foundation beside the church) - the new fellowship hall! What an improvement!

The real bonus is the family sitting behind - my in-laws and brother-in-law 'Judge Joel' - all decked out in white jacket and black bow tie. If you peek right behind my Dad's ear, you can also see my sister-in-law Janice Bolger, along with her parents, Glenn and Ruth [Nancy and I had just gotten married the August before this Christmas gathering]. One of my favorite all-time photos on slide.  ;-)

This is the Summer of 1962, at a gathering of both families, my wife's and mine, when we were back to visit. Our daughter, Annette, nearly 2, has the red belt, center. Behind her are Nancy's sister, Janice, and brother, Joel (who were featured in last Wednesday's photo - I found both of these on the same 'fishing expedition' for other photos!). On the near right, is my youngest brother, Paul. Back left, is my brother, Tom (now he goes by T.K). The girl with the curls is Karmen, my daughter's first cousin.

All I can see, of course, is the ANGEL FOOD CAKE!  ;-)

I don't often feature my wife, Nancy, here, but I came across this photo this evening (looking for something else, of course) and could not pass it by. This is January 1958, about a year and a half before we got married. She is holding younger brother, Joel, and younger sister, Janice. Looking back, now, of course, the lamp, the bookcase, even the family photos on the top, take on special meaning. The house is no longer there either...  ;-)
