Tombstone Tuesday - 3 Aug 2010

Tombstone Tuesday - 3 Aug 2010

This is my sixth report of entering Tombstone Tuesday entries into Find A Grave, per my Challenge #22 and #23 resolution. Today I take on my earlier posts of 30 Mar 2010 and 6 Apr 2010 for brothers, John W. and Franklin Pierce RECTOR.

These are fairly distant relatives to me, but they happened to have died and were buried in the community I was living in at the time I came to know who they were: Emporia, Lyon Co, KS. It was fairly easy to go photograph their tombstones! Small world, as we say!

John W. RECTOR
was the son of Jacob and Frances (LITTLE) RECTOR. John W. RECTOR was born 13 May 1842, in Indiana, and died 17 Apr 1863, at age 23 years, 11 mon, 5 days. He is said to have died of fever, suffering during his Civil War service. He is buried in the Forest Hill - Hunter Cemetery in Lyon County, Kansas (near Emporia) along with others in his family including his brother, Franklin.

Franklin Pierce RECTOR
was born 11 Mar 1855 in South Bend, St. Joseph Co, Indiana, the son of Jacob and Frances (LITTLE) RECTOR. In the 1870 U.S. Census, he was 15 years of age on his parents farm near Neosho Rapids, Jasckson Twp, Lyon Co, KS. He married Carrie Chipman SHAVER on 26 Aug 1883 in Neosho Rapids.
The 1900 U.S. Census finds Franklin P. RECTOR listed as a Teamster in Jackson Twp, with his wife, Carrie, with five children and his brother, Jacob A.
Franklin died 26 Jan 1924 in Emporia, Lyon Co, KS, and is buried there.

Tombstone Tuesday - 6 Jul 2010

Tombstone Tuesday - 6 Jul 2010

This is my fourth report of entering Tombstone Tuesday entries into Find A Grave, per my Challenge #22 and #23 resolution. Today I take on my earlier posts of 10 Nov 2009 on John S. KINNICK, and on 24 Nov 2009, his parents, my 3rd Great Grandparents, at Forest Hill Cemetery, Wyanet, Bureau County, Illinois.

You may recall that John S. KINNICK was the young man mentioned in our 1953 "family history" book as "killed in action, Civil War, abt 1865." Of course, it turned out, based on his tombstone, that he died at his families farm home on 5 Jun 1851, just short of his 14th birthday. I've always treated it as a great example of: Don't report what you don't know!  ;-)

John's father was Walter W. KINNICK
Walter died accidentally, at a relatively young age in 1853, just a little over 43 years old. Susanna lived a long life, over 75 years, and died in 1884.
Walter married Susanna SCHWYHART in Ohio in about 1843 or 1844

John's Mother was Susanna (Susan) SCHWYHART KINNICK (1809-1884). She was born Susanna SWINEHEART, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth ZIMMERMAN SWINEHEART. She and her siblings each changed their surname to SCHWYHART as young adults.
From 1859 to 1870, when he died, Susan was married to Ephriam Yarrington. After his death, she reverted to using her KINNICK surname for the last years of her life. Ephriam was also buried with his first wife.

Tombstone Tuesday - 22 June 2010

Tombstone Tuesday - 22 June 2010

This is my second report of entering Tombstone Tuesday entries into Find A Grave, per my Challenge #22 and #23 resolution. Again, today I am focused on my family, at the Coon Rapids, Iowa, Cemetery, my hometown; this week is Smith (2-9-16 Feb 2010).

I started with my Dad's older sister, Irene Smith (1909-1997).

Find A Grave Memorial# 53816710
She has a simple tombstone in the Coon Rapids, Iowa, Cemetery plot of her parents and several siblings.

The other two I did this week are my paternal grandparents, Dad and Irene's parents, William Emanuel Smith (1869-1939) first.

Find A Grave Memorial# 53816786
He died four months after I was born.

His wife, of course, my grandmother, was Ellen Rebecca PRESTON BALLARD SMITH (1880-1923).

Find A Grave Memorial# 53816956
She died very young, of course, and left several young children to be looked after by her husband and the older sisters.

52 Weeks to Better Genealogy - Challenge #22

52 Weeks to Better Genealogy - Challenge #22

Thanks again to Amy Coffin of We Tree (http://wetree.blogspot.com/) for the inspiration for this set of challenges. (http://wetree.blogspot.com/2010/01/52-weeks-to-better-genealogy.html)

This week we were challenged to spend some time at Find-a-Grave and report on the experience.

While I have used the site, admittedly sparingly, in the past, this was the first time I really looked at it. Here was my experience:

I first saw a link: Search by Location, I clicked on USA - Iowa, and got 365 results.
To my surprise, I saw a list of individuals, not cemeteries, as I expected. Then, I realized I had clicked the "location" link under "Find a Famous Grave" not under "Find Grave" - First lesson learned!  ;-)

Under Find Grave, I used Search for a cemetery, then entered Coon Rapids, USA, Iowa, Carroll County - my hometown cemetery.

Coon Rapids Cemetery came up, with 392 interments listed along with 8 Photo Requests. There was also a very nice, active map of the location, which I knew to be true.

I entered 5 surnames in the search, to see what I would find:

SMITH - 31 names listed, none of them 'my family' - the first Oops; no excuse, I should have seen that 'mine' were entered before this.
KINNICK - 0 - surprise, again... shame on me, as well as others, for no entries.
SORENSEN - 0 - ditto!!
BOLGER - 0 - my wife's name; she and her family have not entered them either.
WILSON - 5 - Happy to see these, by a cousin of my wife, Shawn Brown

I followed up by looking at Shawn's activity - he had entered 42 memorials - good for him, along with 3 photos.

Well, I committed to do this Challenge because I thought it was important to do - even though I am "on vacation" this week. Now I understand why.

I registered as a Contributor and completed the Contributor Page.

One of my new projects will to be to begin converting my many blog entries under Tombstone Tuesday to memorials on Find-a-Grave. Thanks, again, to Amy at We Tree and to Thomas at GeneaBloggers for the reminder!
