Sentimental Sunday
Family time in Estes Park, Colorado
We have been discussing this weekend that we are continuing a very long tradition in our families by spending time together in this wonderful natural setting. My parents brought my brothers and I to Estes Park in 1950. My wife's family visited nearby in the same time period. We were poor farm folks in Western Iowa, but a family trip to the Colorado Rock Mountains was a most memorable family experience. This trip was Nancy and I, along with oldest daughter, Annette and her husband, Larry. His son, Ben, joined us for a couple of days. Larry said his family came here from Illinois when he was young, as well... and he brought his family, as well.
Each of our three daughters love to visit here, primarily because we vacationed here as a family when our girls were young in the 1960s and 70s, as well, regularly. We try to visit, with some of the family, very few years.
I am posting this, as a reminder to myself, and others, that "telling and sharing these current ancestor stories" is so important, as well. The experiences we are having today are the ancestors stories of the future. Record them, share them, and retell them.
I just finished posting some of our family experiences on my "Retirement" blog - "Dr. Bill on Retirement" - which has become my most recent family travels/visits recording place. I started creating web pages on our travels in 1992, and have done so continuously since, in one place or another. This blog is the most recent. You are welcome to visit, once or regularly, if you care to. Some earlier years can be seen here.
I encourage you and yours to record your family stories, in your own way, as well.
Families are Forever! ;-)
Oops, no picture showing, at least to me there is none :(
ReplyDeleteThere is no picture. Just two links. ?!? ;-)
ReplyDeleteThis morning I was thinking about my trip to Springfield in a few weeks. I spent many of my growing up years in Marshfield, just up the road. I have not driven around there in years and thought maybe I'll stop (since I won't have my boys with me) and drive around. I hear it has grown a lot.
ReplyDeleteThen I read your post, which I'm adding to my Follow Friday this week, about current history and it made me think. This weekend I started reading a book called "Courthouse Research" by Christine Rose. Between your post and her book I am wondering if I should definitely stop in Marshfield on my way down, which also happens to be the county seat, and see if there are any records for my family during the time we lived there.
Now I need to look into this and see what possible records we could have created and if they are available at the courthouse.
I really think sometimes genealogy is all about timing...a trip, a blog post, a book being read...a light bulb moment.
It is also called "Enlightenment" by a educated person with a desire to know more about the world around them. Very good plan! ;-)
ReplyDeleteI should have added: My best research always resulted from that kind of "cross-reading" - amazing how something in biology could apply to a management theory I was working on! ;-)
ReplyDeleteEstes Park!! My favorite place ever. We too have many family vacation there. I've done one "picture book" but I really should record some more memories of those times. Hmmm, maybe that will be my Christmas "game" with the kids this year - record each other telling stories about Colorado.
ReplyDeleteThanks for a great idea :-)
@ Diana. I love your idea, as well. Hope you can do it! ;-)
