Wordless (nearly) Wednesday - Iceman

Caption reads: Williams the Iceman and his help, Coon Rapids, Iowa

A couple of years ago, my uncle, now in his early 90s, said he worked on this crew, but he is not in this photo. The cut ice from the river in the winter, stored it in straw, and delivered during the summer. This is probably in the very early 1920s. [The Williams was my mother's uncle.]

Family is Forever! ;-)

  1. very cool photo!! The house my great-grandfather had built (in Dallas) is still standing and still has the door for the ice delivery (though a modern frig is located in a larger space in the remodeled kitchen). The person who now owns the house is young (late 20s, I think) & I commented on the ice door ... she'd never heard of such a thing! Good to keep these elements alive. (And, yes, my WW photo is from a scrapbook on my grandfather's life)

  2. Thanks for the comments and the update on the scrapbook. I agree. These things are important to pass on. Younger folks really should be interested.
